About the Author
David L. DuBois, Ph.D., is a Professor of Community Health Sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He received his doctorate in clinical-community psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. DuBois has conducted extensive research on youth mentoring with funding from a variety of sources, including the National Institutes of Health, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the Institute of Education Sciences. His most recent research includes a comprehensive update of his ground-breaking meta-analytic review of youth mentoring program effectiveness first published more than a decade ago. He is also co-author of After-School Centers and Youth Development: Case Studies of Success and Failure (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Dr. DuBois is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and Society for Community Research and Action and a past Distinguished Fellow of the William T. Grant Foundation. He consults widely to mentoring programs nationally and internationally.

Michael J. Karcher, Ed.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He received a doctorate in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He conducts research on school-based and cross-age peer mentoring as well as on adolescent connectedness and pair counseling. He currently conducts the Study of Mentoring in the Learning Environment (SMILE), which is a three-year research project funded by the William T. Grant Foundation to examine the effects of school-based mentoring.

Who was Jesus and what did he really say? Though not attempting to answer that question, Mayotte, a self-trained theologian, offers a database of sorts to assist in the process. He has gathered sayings attributed to Jesus from 24 ancient sources, including the New Testament, the New Testament Apocrypha, and the Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, and arranged them, without comment, into nine categories. He uses standard translations of the apocryphal and Gnostic texts and three versions of the canonical writings (KJV, NKJV, RSV). Though there is some value in extracting these sayings and making them available in one place, weaknesses limit the usefulness of this work. First, there are notable omissions; for example, the words of Jesus in Acts 1, 9, 11, 20, 22, and 26 and 1 Corinthians 11 are excluded. Second, some of Mayotte's "parables" are actually proverbs, and some of his "doctrines" are warnings or commandments. A few of the sayings appear in more than one category. Since most commercially effective antifoams are oil based, a chapter is devoted to the entry and spreading behavior of oils and the role of thin film forces in determining that behavior. The book reviews the mode of action of antifoams, including theories of antifoam mechanisms and the role of bridging foam films by particles and oil drops. It also addresses issues related to the effect of antifoam concentration on foam formation by air entrainment and the process of deactivation of mixed oil–particle antifoams during dispersal and foam generation.

For applications where chemical antifoam use is unacceptable, the text examines mechanical means of defoaming, such as the use of rotary devices and ultrasound. The final chapters consider the application of defoaming in radically different contexts including waterborne latex paints and varnishes, machine washing of textiles, gas–oil separation in crude oil production, and cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. About the Author

After working for Unilever Research for almost thirty years at Port Sunlight and for a short time at Bangalore, Peter Garrett retired, acquiring visiting professorships at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and briefly at Rice University, Houston, Texas. He has worked on various aspects of interfacial science in a career lasting 40 years. These included the equilibrium and dynamic adsorption behavior of surfactant solutions, solubilization in microemulsions, kinetics of surfactant dissolution and mesophase growth, and of course both the basic science of defoaming and its application especially in the detergents industry.

Professor Garrett is author or coauthor of more than 30 journal articles and is named as inventor on 14 patents, the majority of which concerned the application of antifoam technology. He is also editor of the book Defoaming, Theory and Applications published in 1993. A member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom in 1971.

From the Author
When I started writing this book, my goal was to teach readers how to build compensation structures using various types of active elements. Actually, most of the textbooks that I owned only disclosed compensation structures using operational amplifiers. In our industry, there are other active elements that can be implemented in compensators: TL431, transconductance amplifiers (OTA) and shunt regulators. I have dedicated chapters to all of these devices, including the effects of the optocoupler in the case of isolated converters.
When these chapters were over, I decided to add theoretical information on loop control. How to tackle the subject without reproducing what already exists in good textbooks? The main idea was to narrow down the text content to what an engineer should really know for his daily job. Indeed, the world of control systems is wide and you don't need to know everything for your engineering tasks. The main idea of this book is to bridge theoretical knowledge to practical reality: derive equations and put them at work in design examples. Where phase and gain margins come from, what is delay margin, how do I link PID coefficients to poles/zeros placements and so on. As usual, I derived all equations including intermediate steps so that you can easily follow the flow. The book uses power electronics examples but theory can be equally learned and applied to other engineering fields.
This book is not a substitute to classical textbooks but it can be seen as a design companion for the engineer and as a class complement for the student. Both look for a bridge between what they have learned at university and the engineering world reality. I modestly hope this book will fulfill that goal.

Christophe Basso is a technical engineer at ON Semiconductor (formerly Motorola Semiconductor) in France, and a frequent contributor to power electronics magazines and conferences. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a graduate of the Institut Polytechnique de Toulouse, where he received a MSEE and occasionally teaches.
