I recently launched my own business and this book has been a valuable tool, not only for my marketing efforts, but even for the way I approach my business. I have general understanding of marketing, but the SEO Battlefield really helps to break things down into understandable topics. Many books about the news rules for marketing and growth hacking are heavy on homily, but lack any practical discussion - this was a refreshing change of pace. The author provides pragmatic advice for aspiring marketers and presents it in her own voice, which keeps the content fresh. Experienced SEOs may find themselves well-versed in this topic, but for a neophyte like myself this is a wealth of information.

This is another solid book from O'Reilly.The author gives a good overview of the areas that a digital marketer must consider when creating content for the web. It's a BIG topic, but the author did a good job of keeping it entertaining and accessible.I would suggest using this to get an understanding of the big picture surrounding SEO so that you can feel a bit more confident the next time you create content or launch a campaign.

I'm thrilled to finally have a copy of this book, not only because it's an entertaining and informative read, but because it finally takes from her brain to paper information from one of the smartest digital marketers I've ever met.Anne has been operating online professionally since pre-web, and her digital-native knowledge shines through in this tome.Her approach to marketing has always been results-oriented and data-driven, and her advice in this book reflects that.

For someone like me that has a general understanding of SEO but is far from proficient, not to mention expert, I found this book interesting, and easy to read. The case studies were particularly helpful in grasping the concepts and approaches. It's difficult to write for the wide range of experience and expertise with this important, complicated and often esoteric subject. I doubt experts will take a lot away from this but for beginners and generalist interested in the subject - I think it offers some great insight and takeaways.

A detailed forward looking approach to building search programs. A must read for search pros and beginners alike. I really liked the campaign ideas and the chapter about the future. Kinda blew my mind.

I'm about a qaurter of a way through the book and it's an excruciating read. I was hoping for "winning strategies" and instead it seems like a mashup of a general overview of SEO and repetitive statements about how it's good to keep learning... Ugh. I hope it gets better. I'm already skipping around to try and find something I didn't already know.If I can finish this book, I'll update my review.I gave it 2 stars because the writer seems smart - but wow this book needed a good edit once over and a more accurate title like "Overivew of SEO with Some Ideas"

Okay, this is one of those book that is so good, it remains worth reading despite the author’s terrible writing style. Anne Ahold Ward definitely knows her stuff when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but she is a poor writer and didn’t have a good editor. It might have been George Orwell who wrote some rules for writers many decades ago, among which rules was a warning to use foreign language or jargon. Well, Ms. Ward doesn’t use foreign language, but she is up to her ears in jargon. I found myself resorting often to the book’s index (which is quite good) or Google’s “define:” function. Too often. I appreciate concise writing, but the feeling I got here was of a seminar presenter or college instructor trying to cram all they know into an hour – or of someone pitching their agency’s brilliance and prowess to a committee or board with limited time, patience and interest. Not coincidentally, Ward is a “Growth Scientist and CEO of CircleClick Media, a leading digital agency and marketing lab in the Bay Area. She is also a self-proclaimed Futurist. All that said, Ms. Ward has turned out one heck of an informative book worth the patience required to read it. The title may be unintentionally misleading. In the second paragraph of the Preface, Ms. Ward warns “If you’ve never really heard of SEO and have no marketing or technical experience, then you may want to read other . . . books on these topics first. Absolutely. Because Ms. Ward launches into a whirlwind tour de force of Search Engine Optimization in its every aspect. I am amazed she packed so much information into so few pages. Some of the examples and case histories are fascinating, like how the author turned lemons into lemonade with a rental house she owns in Austin TX, site of SXSW. She truly covers a broad swath of territory, including things like crowdfunding and YouTube SEO. Despite her writing style, I intend to read this a second time because I learned a lot and I know I missed a lot. Final analysis. Not for beginners. Author’s style and excessive use of jargon makes for a difficult read. But packed with useful and usable information.Jerry

I have found that as a baby boomer expat, I have become more interested in the history of my country over the years. Australian history was not taught at Melbourne schools back in my day - it was all English history. A great shame and hopefully rectified in these more enlightened times. For many years there was a sense of shame about our history and origins as a penal colony but those days are fortunately passed.Robert Hughes masterpiece “The Fatal Shore” is my favorite book on the subject but I really enjoyed Thomas Keneally’s account. His gritty description of the early days of the colony is compelling. He paints a vivid portrait of the troubles Capt. Phillip encountered - first at Botany Bay which was not suitable for a settlement and then at Port Jackson, a wonderful harbor that was home to population of convicts and their military minders - although they were not far removed in many respects.He does a thorough job of describing the woeful logistical management of the second fleet as well as the importance of the relationship between Capt. Phillip and Bennelong, the key conduit to the native aboriginal population. In fact, Capt. Phillip is the under appreciated hero of the book (and arguably of Australia’s history) - his governance of the colony set it on a path to becoming the vibrant country it is today.

As a UIL Social Studies coach, I have been required to read several assigned texts, and this year's text "A Commonwealth of Thieves" is chock full of information and is (perhaps more importantly) interesting. There have been a few texts before that read like encyclopedias and were a chore to use, this book has a good index and reads a little like a novel. The author has written fiction before and that shows. He also is renowned as the author of "Schindler's List". His skill as an author shows as the main characters are fleshed out as best as the historical record allows, and the narrative has a decent flow to it. I didn't know much about that era or that part of the world other than the basic skeleton of it all and am glad to have read it. I think the kids will enjoy it. The book primarily focuses on the First Fleet of sailors, marines, and British convicts that set up the first European colony on Australia, near what would become present day Sydney. The book concludes with the first governor, Governor Phillip returning to England (along with an epilogue sewing up all the primary characters' lives). I would recommend it, and although there is some frank discussion of what occurred between the male and female convicts (and soldiers) as well as between the Aborigines and the English, high school age students would be okay in reading it.

Excellent history full of anecdotes bringing to life the experiences of the first settlers. The book humanizes all players, showing the positive role that a large number of transportees played, without omitting the deviousness and untrustworthiness of an equally large number of settlers, military and convict alike. The Fatal Shore is an excellent book, but it presents an almost unmigitated picture of the grimness of everything. Commonwealth of Thieves adds the balance necessary to understand why Australia has become the extraordinarily vibrant country that it is today.

This is hard for me to rate because I found much of the book too tedious. I enjoyed reading the beginning chapters and the epilogue, but got. bogged down reading all the details in the middle chapters. I may try again after visiting Australia. I am sure it is well-documented with valuable information.

Surprisingly well written non fiction that reads like a novel

Everyone knows about the "convicts" that formed the nucleus of Australia's earliest settlers. Keneally gives us an introduction to the people themselves, what their lives had been like in England, the dangers and challenges they faced to start new lives on what must have seemed a different planet to then. This is an exceptional tale of Humans living on the edge and learning to make the best of it.

I read several non-fiction books a month, for years. This is one of best reads. Very well written and organized. Especially appreciated the Prologue.

This volume has its roots in the predigital era. Roger's edited volume Fieldnotes: The Makings of Anthropology, published in 1990, focused attention on how anthropologists record their experiences when doing ethnographic fieldwork. On its cover are Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson working in their "mosquito room" in an Iatmul village with the technology of 1938, namely notepads, two manual typewriters, and film cameras. The volume provided an array of perspectives on fieldnotes and fieldwork, introduced useful vocabulary (such as "headnotes" and "scratchnotes"), offered critical guidance to researchers, and has circulated widely and been cited frequently. In the intervening years, technology has changed not only how anthropologists conduct their fieldwork but also how they record, process, analyze, and communicate their findings. These changes present new technical, ethical, and theoretical challenges fieldworkers face that could not have been addressed or anticipated two and a half decades ago.

Roger had begun contemplating a successor volume to Fieldnotes when Susan and he happened to meet at a small restaurant in their New York City neighborhood in May 2011. Susan was an anthropologist studying anonymous discussion boards where parents of toddlers and young children post information and express opinions. Our discussions about the impact of new digital technologies on ethnography continued through a score of meetings during 2011-2014. We shared and commented on readings, Susan helped Roger decode and translate digital terminology, and we agreed to co-organize and coedit a volume on "efieldnotes." In 2012, we invited the contributors to this volume to participate in panels we chaired at the 2013 Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) meetings in Denver and the American Anthropological Association (AAA) meetings in Chicago (all but three could and did); we also circulated a reading list on Internet ethnography, including work by our coauthors, and hosted overlapping groups of efieldnotes participants at dinner discussions during the 2012 AAA meetings in San Francisco, 2013 SfAA and AAA meetings in Denver and Chicago, and 2014 AAA meetings in Washington, D.C. In an interesting twist on the online versus IRL (in real life) question, the SfAA panel has existed as a podcast (http://sfaapodcasts.net/2013/03/25/efieldnotes-makings-of-anthropology-in-a-digital-world/) since 2013, with presentations by Roger, Jenna Burrell, Martin Slama, and Lisa Cliggett followed by a lively audience discussion.

As the wheels of anthropology have turned over the past two and a half decades, so have the wheels of the world and the wheels of our lives during the period in which this book was conceived and produced. In places our readers will visit in chapters that follow, the aftermath of the March 11, 2011, disasters in Japan; the continued violence affecting Kurdistan and Kurds; and the 2014 devastation of Ebola in Liberia have shaped the work and personal lives of many anthropologists, including William Kelly, Diane King, and Mary Moran. More joyfully, seven babies entered the lives of six of our eFieldnotes coauthors: Kenzo Douglas Kubo (Burrell), August and Maurice Jones, Jesus Andrew (King), Julian Channing Kraemer Moore, Luuk Verheijen (Schrooten), and Miles Tratner.
